Description
North Carolina August 8, 1778 $1/4 Independence Fr. NC-171.PMG Extremely Fine 40.After the fascinating April 2, 1776, notes and the two issues that preceded it, North Carolina returned to typeset issues, which were easier to print in the quantities required. Many of these types are difficult to procure in top grades and have been underappreciated. This series has multiple denominations from $1/8 to $100 and numerous English language motto varieties depending on the denomination (in some cases there is more than one different motto per denomination). All are printed by James Davis and have printed backs. The $1/4 is the second lowest (after the $1/8) and has the "Independence" motto in a cartouche of ornamental type. Printed on thick paper. Noted by PMG with a "Tape Repair" on the back that seals a longer tear from the top edge. This low denomination is very scarce in high grades.
