Description

Independence Personified in Sword in Hand Vignette

Massachusetts November 17, 1776 22s PMG Very Fine 30.
There are two variants of the popular Sword in Hand design. The first was issued in 1775 with the Colonial soldier holding a copy of the Magna Carta. By the 1776 issue, the design was changed to a scroll featuring the word, "Independence," following the Declaration of Independence just months earlier. The design elements here are still bold for the grade, with strong signatures and serial number on the face.
