Description

Massachusetts December 7, 1775 36s Contemporary Counterfeit PMG Very Fine 30 Net.
Counterfeits plagued colonial notes due to the relatively crude printing techniques employed during the period which were relatively easy to copy. In the case of this contemporary counterfeit of the popular sword-in-hand 36s note, the diagnostic is quite subtle. The hyphen in the word "pay-ments" in the text just above the sailing ship vignette is too high. On genuine notes, the hyphen is towards the bottom rather than the middle of the adjacent "m" in "-ments." In addition, the masts on the sailing vessel are straight rather than leaning to the right as on genuine notes. PMG mentions that the note has been repaired and has pen cancellations lightened, although these issues are not readily discernable.
