Top Pop Rising Sun Colonial Engraved by Paul Revere
Massachusetts 1779 1s 6d PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.This note was part of £20,000 in substitute denomination bills that were issued to replace earlier notes no longer fit for circulation. Paul Revere engraved the new face plate which has an interesting vignette of the sun with the subscript RISING, while the back design was a continuation of the design used in the previous issue. 9,411 1s 6d notes were authorized to be issued. Paul Revere printed the faces and Thomas Fleet printed the backs. The note is darkly printed with clear margins all the way around on both sides. The bold serial number and signature of George Partridge are strong and legible. This piece is top pop for the denomination, with only two slightly better graded by PMG for all notes from the entire series. We have sold both of those PMG Choice Unc 64 examples, one of which was Hinged. This is a superb example that carries the eye appeal of a piece several points better.
