Description

Georgia 1769 Printed "9" in date £1 PCGS Very Fine 25.
This rare issue consisted of a total circulation of £2,200 of £1 certificates spread across two different varieties. The first variety has a written "9" in the date and the second variety has a printed "9" in the date. The example in this lot is of the latter variety. The purpose of the issue was to rebuild the lighthouse on Tybee Island at the Savannah River entrance. Two lighthouses had previously succumbed to natural disasters at this location. John Mullryne constructed a 100 foot brick tower in 1773 as the third lighthouse. This lighthouse lasted until 1862. Previously, we have auctioned only one example of each variety from this issue, with both notes coming from the Eric Newman Collection. The printed "9" in the date piece graded PCGS Apparent VF 30 and climbed to $5,170 at our 2015 Central States Numismatic Society auction. Our current offering has comments on the PCGS back label that mention repaired splits, tears, and minor damage similar to the comments for the earlier Newman example. Tonight our estimate may once again prove to be too conservative, just like in 2015.
