A total of $3,010,000 in Continental Currency was authorized on November 29, 1775, with $10,000 of that amount earmarked for the replacement of worn notes. The $3 featured an emblem depicting an eagle and a heron fighting with the appropriate for the times motto of EXITUS IN DUBIO EST (The outcome is in doubt). The note is darkly printed with sharp design elements on bright paper with straight clear margins (including a large left margin) and bold signatures of Joseph Watkins, Jr. and Nicholas Garrison.
