Description
Marbled Edge $20 1775 Continental Currency
Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $20 PMG Very Fine 25
Net.The $20 denomination from the very first issue of Continental Currency in 1775 is one of America's most historic paper money designs. A special marbled polychromatic paper, provided by Benjamin Franklin, was used to print the 11,800 examples of this denomination. The final result is a note that is greatly cherished by Colonial collectors as evidenced by the fact that this design was chosen to appear on the front cover of The Early Paper Money of America 2023 edition by Eric P. Newman. While visually stunning with multiple bright colors along one edge, this paper turned out to be not all that well suited for currency uses as it was rather thin and fragile. As a result a very large percentage of these $20s have come down to us with various impairments, repairs, and restorations. While this example has an edge stain and has been severed, reattached, and repaired, it is still a quite presentable example whose marbled left end is unaffected by any of the impairments.
