Description

Continental Currency July 22, 1776 $30 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
This is one of the very popular $30 notes with the double vignette on the back, boldly signed by John Howard and Thomas Leech. The mottos with the emblems on the back are VI CONCITATE (Driven by force) and CESSANTE VENTO CONQUIESCEMUS (When the storm dies down we will rest). The emblem on the front is a tomb with a wreath on it. The motto is SI RECTE FACIES (If you act righteously you will be honored after death). With this scarce Continental emission, the $1 denomination was dropped and the $30 denomination was added. This was apparently done with the idea that a silver Continental Dollar coin was going to be minted. Seen with wide margins on all sides and deep black printing. Minor stains are noted by PMG.
