Description
Continental Currency April 11, 1778 $5 Contemporary Counterfeit PMG About Uncirculated 50.Extensive British-sponsored counterfeiting led to the demise of this issue. The diagnostics of this $5 contemporary counterfeit were published on an official broadside of the era and are listed on page 443 on the 2023 edition of The Early Paper Money of America by Eric P. Newman. The "A" is too short and too near the "N" in "Spanish," the first "S" in "Congress" is smaller than the second "S." There is also no comma after "April." The note in this lot is tied with one other for the highest PMG graded example of this counterfeit. Counterfeiters like to artificially add circulation to their product in order to make them more acceptable to the populace.
