Description
Connecticut May 10, 1775 40s Counterfeit PMG Very Fine 30.Newman reported that this counterfeit was crudely engraved by Henry Dawkins who was a silversmith, engraver, and counterfeiter who quickly ran afoul of the law and was imprisoned. Providing intelligence he picked up in prison about a British plan to blow up Kings Bridge, isolating Manhattan and with it, Washington's army, Dawkins earned his release. The most apparent diagnostic for detecting this as a counterfeit (aside from the bold Xs on both the face and back) is that the crossbar on the "t" in the first word "Forty" in the text is higher than the top of the "y". PMG mentions that the note is split.
