North Carolina May 15, 1779 $5 Be Freedom and Independence Steadily Pursued PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ.The Act of May 15, 1779 authorized the issue of £500,000 ($1,250,000) in legal tender Bills of Credit payable in Spanish milled dollars. Denominations ranged from $5 to $250 and were printed with a rather striking top black border in Wilmington by Hugh Walker. Secret marks were added to each denomination to discourage counterfeiting but proved to be ineffective. 10,000 $5s of each variety were printed for this issue, with this variety having the motto Be Freedom and Independence steadily pursued and a secret mark of a small "u" over the "y" in "May." Very well margined and retaining original surfaces, this is a lovely example of this better issue that is pedigreed to the Eric P. Newman collection.
