Description

Unique for Bank and Town

Oakville, TX - $10 1902 Red Seal Fr. 615 The First National Bank Ch. # (S)8807 PMG Very Fine 20.
This great Texas rarity hails from one of the more obscure locations in the southern part of the state. It is the only note known from this issuer that opened its doors in 1905 when Oakville was the county seat of Live Oak County, a distinction it would lose in 1919 when the county seat was relocated to the town of George West. Not so coincidentally, the bank also closed its doors that same year with an outstanding circulation of just $5,700. Today, Oakville is just a dusty wide spot in the road with a current population of 200 souls. This offering represents a bank and town that eluded all of the major Texas collectors over the years, including Philpott, Everson, Irish, and Ivy, among others. PMG has mentioned some stains, but, otherwise, this is a pleasing, pen-signed $10 with excellent color and solid paper for the grade. This is truly a unique Texas note that is worth whatever it takes.
