Description

Excessively Rare Fr. 1202 $100 Gold Certificate Face Proof

Fr. 1202 $100 1882 Gold Certificate (Partial) Face Proof PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
This $100 1882 Gold Certificate variety features a portrait of Thomas Hart Benton at left. Benton, the long-time (1821-1851) Senator representing Missouri, was a strong supporter of Jackson and a hard money advocate. A 100 denominational counter is at right. The signature layout, with the engraved signatures of Bruce and Gilfillan at right and a space for the signature of the Assistant Treasurer to the left (without the accompanying text found on issued notes), was set up for the so-called three signature version of this design. The Face Proof is printed on India paper with two roulette 000000 cancels in the lower left and upper right corners and is mounted on larger format paper. Given the excessive rarity of the actual notes, a Face Proof is about the only realistic way to acquire the design in any form. This Face Proof sold for $38,187 in 2014 and is formerly part of The Joel R. Anderson Collection. On items of great rarity, valuations are often, to some degree, guess work. We have set a conservative estimate to allow the market to determine the worth of this important Face Proof.
