Description
New York, NY- Crook's Hotel and Saloon 25¢ ND (ca. 1862-64) Harris H400 Remainder PMG Uncirculated 62.S.H. and J.H. Crook opened a "Hotel & Dining Saloon" in 1851. The hotel is listed at the address shown on this note, 74 Chatham Street, as well as 84 Chatham Street from the 1860s to the 1880s. Tragically, S.H. Crook committed suicide in 1890 due to business reversals. This note was undoubtedly used during the mid-1860s when coins disappeared from circulation due to the Civil War. The note is unusual in that it has four vignettes of roosters, perhaps indicating the owners' political views as the rooster was often considered a symbol of the Democratic Party at the time. The note has a tape repair of a tear in the lower right margin and a single POC in the signature space. We are unaware of any additional surviving examples of this note at present.
Estimate: $400 - up.
