Description

Cut Off, AR- Herbert Thatcher $5 18__ Remainder Rothert-UNL PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
Located in Lafayette County, which occupied the entirety of the southwest corner of Arkansas, Cut Off received its name because it "cut off" Washington, AR, from Shreveport, LA. This town served as the first seat of justice in the county, but would become a ghost town after the Red River lost its vitality as a major transportation route. This possibly unique $5 is not listed in the Rothert reference Arkansas Obsolete Notes and Scrip, and the author only records a $1 note from this issuer on page 62. This issuer's notes were printed by the St. Louis Bank Note Company. At left are two beehives representing Industry, at center is a depiction of Justice with her scales, sword, and federal shield, and at right is a bald eagle perched atop a shield. An intricate brown back finishes the layout. We have only offered a representative of this design and denomination a single time previously. We auctioned that note, which was none other than the rarity in this lot, raw in January 2019 for $1,020. That figure could very well be outperformed tonight. PMG comments on the presence of a punch cancellation in the serial number space as well as pinholes.
