Cahawba, AL- State of Alabama $5 June 18, 1821 Cr. UNL Gunther-Derby AS-001-$5g Rosene UNL PMG Very Fine 30.The variety represented in this lot most closely resembles the Gunther-Derby AS-001-$5g design. The authors of this reference name its layout "Payment Style B." This design has several characteristics, including "Five Dollars" written in Olde English font and the fund appropriated space being handwritten. We have offered this scarce variety, which is unlisted in Criswell, just twice previously. The most recent example of this variation to cross our auction block, a PMG VF 25 graded piece, brought $900 in January 2020. PMG mentions the presence of a neatly executed hammer cut cancel.
