Description

Mobile, AL- Mechanics' Aid Association at Deposit Bank $5 June 19, 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-324-$5b PMG Very Fine 25.
From newspaper notices, it appears that the Mechanics Aid Association was incorporated circa 1860. Beyond that there is little information to be found on the association. The signer, George Steele, was listed with what could be considered as mechanic skills, as a tinsmith in the 1860 federal census for Mobile, so your cataloger will hazard an educated guess that the Association was probably some type of a social/benevolent organization, supporting the mechanics of the area. Payable at the Deposit Bank, the $5 has a rather plain design printed on gray paper with simple end panels.

Estimate: $100 - up.
