Description

Scarce New York $500 1918 FRN

Fr. 1132-B $500 1918 Federal Reserve Note PMG Very Fine 30.
This high denomination FRN features the portrait of Chief Justice John Marshall engraved by Charles Schlecht, based on a painting by John Inman done in 1832, on the face and a massive detailed vignette titled DeSoto Discovering the Mississippi engraved by Frederick Girsch, based on a painting by W.H. Powell, on the back. This note is new to the Track & Price Census, bringing it to 56 listed examples, four of which reside in either the Smithsonian or Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco collections. It sits in about the middle of the notes listed in terms of grade. The note has seen some circulation with incidental soiling and handling, but retains good colors and paper with decent margins and centering.
