Choice New 64;Fr. 31-35 Hessler 17 $1 1880 Legal Tender Back Proof PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
The face has printed signatures and serial number A00000. Both face and back are as perfect as they could be with their razor sharp impressions. The mounted on cardstock Face and Back Proofs are listed on page 39 of the second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes by Gene Hessler. We originally auctioned the $1 Series 1880 Proofs in this lot in our September 2001 Cincinnati auction and we have not offered any others since then. A closer look at our archives reveals that we have offered very few Series 1880 Legal Tender Proofs. In fact, we have auctioned only one other Face and Back Proof pair on Series 1880. It was a Fr. 56 Hessler 162 Face/Fr. 50-56 Back Proof $2 pair with each side earning a grade of PMG 66 EPQ. It realized $14,100 in April 2015. Our current Proof Pair offering is close enough in grade to still bring five figures. (Total: 2 notes)
Estimate: $10,000 - up.
