Description

Ashville, AL- E. Goode 50¢ Oct. 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-106-$.50a Rosene 9-2 PMG Fine 12.
From the text included on the face of the note, it appears as though E. Goode was the proprietor of the Ashville Hotel. Besides being payable in a wide variety of goods, such as ambrotypes, postage, and tavern bills, the note could also be exchanged for Confederate Treasury Notes or other current notes. We last auctioned this example, which served as the plate note on page 46 of the Gunther-Derby reference, in September 2001, when it realized $412. We have not offered any note from this issuer since May 2010. PMG mentions evidence of a previous mounting as well as a repair at upper left on the back.
From The Jerry Loegler Collection

Estimate: $300 - up.
