Description

Cherokee County, AL- Cornwall Iron Works Company at Agency of the Planters Bank of Savannah at Rome GA $1 Aug. 1, 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-144-$1a PCGS Banknote Very Good 10 Details.
The Noble family began an iron works business in 1855 and in 1862 was commissioned by the Confederate government to construct two new furnaces near present-day Cedar Bluff, AL, whose output was to be used for cannons, caissons, and other iron products. Iron production, which was sent to the company's Rome foundry, commenced in the course of late 1862 to early 1863 and continued until 1864 when the furnaces were put out of production by Union military forces. The site was rebuilt after the war with production ceasing for the second and final time in 1874. The notes were payable in Confederate Treasury Notes when presented in sums of $10 or its multiples at the firm's bank, an agency of the Planters Bank (of the State of Georgia) of Savannah located in Rome, GA. Agencies provided banking services for the parent bank, but did not issue their own notes. This $1 type features a large passenger train vignette and another of Crawford's Freedom which ironically was being readied to be placed atop the United States Capitol Dome, where it still resides today. An orange 1 - ONE DOLLAR - 1 protector and 1 DOLLAR end panel complete the design. This note, which looks like it was originally printed on the back of some type of fiscal document, has been severed, partially reattached, and backed with a period newspaper fragment. We are aware of two examples of this note at present.

Estimate: $450 - up.
