Description

Cahawba, AL- State of Alabama $20 Dec. 28, 1820 Cr. UNL Gunther-Derby UNL PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30 Details.
From the series with a partially printed date of Dec. 1820, this $20 variety is presently unlisted in all of the major state references and is the only example known to us. Its distinctive features are plate letter C and denominational counter frames comprising single and double asterisks. This $20 warrant with serial number 1264 was payable to brothers David and Nicholas Crocheron. They had built the first Alabama state house capitol building for $13,500. These two brothers were merchants from New York and had built a few of the early buildings in Cahawba. The warrant in this lot is comparable to holding history in your hands. The note is hammer canceled and has a missing portion of the upper right corner. On a note of this rarity, these distractions are of little significance to knowledgeable collectors.
