Description

Likely Unique for the Bank

Auburn, NY - $1 Original Fr. 380a The Auburn City National Bank Ch. # 1285 PMG Very Fine 30.
A lovely Original Series Ace, this piece comes from a rare Auburn bank which issued First Charters only before liquidating in 1875. We last offered this note in our auction of The Bill Sabis Collection in 2003. It remains as pretty today as when we first laid our eyes upon it over 20 years ago. It is very well margined with bright paper, bold inks, and dark pen signatures. The National Currency Foundation census does list two other notes reported from this charter, both Original Series $10s in very low grade. However, Original Series $10s from this bank were heavily counterfeited and are well documented in the monograph on Counterfeit National Bank Notes published by Bob Cochran some thirty years ago. Therefore, this Ace may well be unique as a genuine note from this tough charter. Either way, it remains a great New York rarity that will be a highlight of the next collection it enters.
