Description

Bergen Iron Works, NJ- Ocean Bank $1 Mar. 1, 1851 as G2 Wait 59 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was organized as a free bank in 1851 and remained in business for a few years before closing in 1854, perhaps a victim of the Panic of 1854. The $1 design features a large portrait of a sailor with a telescope and sextant gazing out to sea from a dock. A vignette of a sailing vessel and the state banking die are on the left and an allegorical representation of perhaps Industry or Manufacturing as well as a shell containing a security statement. A small vignette of seashells appears at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper with three spots of hinge adhesive residue noted by PMG on the back. Three examples of this note appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. This particular note was once part of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection
