Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of the State of South Carolina $4 Dec. 2, 1860 G42b Sheheen 563 PMG Very Fine 30.
The bank was organized in 1812 and served as the state's fiscal agent through the end of the Civil War. After the war, lengthy litigation resulted in the bank not being allowed to declare bankruptcy because it was owned by the state. The $4 features a vignette of one of the harbor's forts, Fort Moultrie. It is flanked by portraits of Robert Hayne and Langdon Cheves. Hayne was a politician, serving in the United States Senate (1823-32), as Governor of South Carolina (1832-34), and as Mayor of Charleston (1836-37). Cheves also held a number of political offices including Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1814-1815) before serving as President of the Second Bank of the United States (1819-1823). A pleasant evenly circulated cancelled note with a large red FOUR protector.
