Description

New York, NY- Bank of the Commonwealth $1 May 5, 1853 UNL PMG Very Fine 20.
The Bank of the Commonwealth was organized in 1853 and operated until becoming the National Bank of the Commonwealth in the City of New York, charter 1372, in 1865. This incredible ace, produced by Danforth, Wright & Co., had its design elements printed in blue. At left, Liberty reclines with her pole and cap, at center is the state bank department's die, and at right, a sailor gazes out to sea as he is at the ship's wheel. Bold red overprints at either end of the note complete the design. Only one example of this design and denomination, which is unlisted in the Haxby reference, has crossed our auction block prior to now. That note, which was none other than the one in this lot, realized $930 in June 2022.
