Description

Fishkill Landing, NY- "W.D. Van Wagner"(?) 5¢ July 4, 1862 Harris H15 PMG Very Fine 20.
Bad handwriting is one of the challenges encountered in attributing scrip, and this note is a case in point. Looking at the signature, it appears to be something along the lines of W.D. Van Wagner, but your cataloger suspects that that is not the name as the bumps and squiggles do not quite match. In any case, the note is payable to S.G. Smith, with a Silas G. Smith being listed as a merchant in nearby Matteawan, less than two miles away. The design is quite simple with a simple 5 counter at upper left and a tablet with the Latin phrase NECESSITAS COGIT (necessity forces) at bottom left. Interestingly the bearer is offered the option of having the scrip redeemed in coin "at current rates." Very scarce and seldom offered with this being only the second example we have offered.
