Description
Princeton, MS- Lake Washington and Deer Creek Rail Road & Banking Company $50 Mar. 2, 1837 G10 Kraus 10493 PMG Choice Fine 15.The firm was organized in early 1836 as the Lake Washington & Deer Creek Rail Road and Banking Company, with stock subscription books opened on April 25, 1836. The original mission of the company was to build a rail line between Lake Washington and Deer Creek that would result in cotton being efficiently moved from Princeton to ports on the Mississippi. On February 16, 1838, with the Panic of 1837 playing havoc with the company's construction plans, the state relieved the company from its railroad construction mission and commitment and rechartered it as the Bank of Mississippi. The last mention of the Bank of Mississippi appears on February 15, 1860, regarding unspecified legislation related to the bank. Its ultimate fate is unknown although the fact that unused sheets of its notes were used to print other issues during the Civil War suggests that the bank probably closed its doors before 1860-61. The $50 design features a vignette of Justice standing at left and another of America seated by Ceres and a sailor at right. Several sources estimate a surviving population of around 10-15 examples in issued form.
