Description

Princeton, MS- Lake Washington & Deer Creek Rail Road & Banking Company $20 18__ G8 Kraus 10492p Leggett 10 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The charming Proof in this lot was produced by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty for a bank which opened in 1836 and was reorganized in 1838. Though its original purpose was to construct a railway from Lake Washington to Deer Creek, the project was never completed. This piece features a cameo like medallion head of Minerva, goddess of the arts and defensive war, at far left, a frontiersman surveying the land at upper left, and a cherub reclining at right. A stag prances through the wilderness at lower center between the signature lines. We have not been afforded the opportunity to auction a $20 Proof from this company prior to now. In fact, the only Proof we have offered previously from the institution of any denomination was a $5 example which graded PMG 66 EPQ and realized $600 in March 2020. We expect that figure to be tested or even outdistanced for the rarity offered here. The note is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with signature cut outs. PMG has bestowed upon this representative its coveted EPQ designation for fully original paper surfaces.
