Description

Brooklyn, NY- Nassau Hotel 10¢ ND (ca. 1863-64) Harris H53 Remainder PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
The hotel was in business during the period roughly encompassing the 1850s to 1870s. This note probably dates to around 1863 when the government started efforts to suppress private scrip issues as it goes to some lengths to clearly state that it is a "medium of exchange." The note design is well executed with a large vignette of Liberty seated at left. This note appears to be the Harris Collection example which we first auctioned in 2003. Although the only other example of which we are aware has a higher technical grade, it also has two large areas of staining / toning.
