Description

Nebraska City, NE- (Treasurer of) Nebraska City $1 ___ 1872 Proprietary Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
From newspaper accounts in the early 1870s, it appears that the city depended on City Warrants which routinely were only accepted at a discount from cash. The design features a portrait of a young girl at bottom center flanked by vignettes of a farm girl taking a break during the harvest at upper left and a 1 surrounded by sheep and a youthful Mercury at right. The borders and security panels over the signature spaces are printed in green. From Proofs produced for the city, we know that they were originally sent to the city in July 1872. This is a modern Proprietary Proof printed from the original plates by ABNCo during the 20th century for company projects and programs. The exact quantity printed is unknown at present.
