Description

Vicksburg, MS- Bank of Vicksburg $5 18__ G8 Kraus 4400p Leggett UNL Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The Bank of Vicksburg was incorporated in 1837 and remained in business until 1840 when its charter was forfeited due to failure to redeem its circulation in specie. By December 23, 1841, the bank's notes were being quoted at 10-15ยข on the dollar. The $5 design features a scantily clad Liberty seated by a shield and eagle flanked by identical ornate FIVE end panels. The note is printed on India paper with four rather roughly punched POCs in the signature lines. Three examples appeared in Lot 827 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and Haxby was aware of, and illustrated, the type in Proof form in 1988. An accurate estimate of the surviving population of Proofs is difficult, but a number somewhere around 6-8 or so examples seems to be directionally correct.
