Description

Owasso, MI- Bank of Shiawassee $1 18__ G2 Lee OWO-2-2 Remainder PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The Bank of Shiawassee was organized at the very end of 1837 and had plates made and circulating notes printed in anticipation of commencing operations in 1838. It appears that that never happened, as period press reports indicate that the bank never opened its doors. The $1 design features a vignette of a dog lying by a safe with a key symbolizing Fidelity flanked by a vignette of Justice standing at left and a Native American breaking a horse at right. Note that the town name is spelled incorrectly on all notes as "Owasso;" the correct spelling is Owosso. PMG notes minor evidence of previous mounting on the back. This note is very scarce with only a small handful of examples known at present.
