Description

Niles, MI- R.C. Paine's Banking House 10¢ Jan. 1, 1861 Lee NIL-2-1 PMG Very Fine 25.
R.C. Paine began his banking career serving as the Cashier of the agency of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank in Niles between 1836 and 1852. He gave his profession as banker in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Federal census and apparently maintained a private banking and insurance business until his death in 1875. The 10¢ design features the Michigan coat of arms flanked by a portrait of Washington at left, a girl in the water below, and a vignette of a woman feeding her horse at right. This is the first 10¢ note we have offered from this rare Michigan issuer. Period accounts indicate that Paine was scrupulously honest and that his notes were considered good as gold, accounting for their rarity today.
