Description
Monroe, MI- Village of Monroe $1.67 "Receipt" ND (1850s) Lee MON-5-1 Remainder PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30.Originally known as Frenchtown, the village was renamed after the War of 1812 and incorporated as the Village of Monroe. The village was re-incorporated as the City of Monroe in 1837. The design features vignettes of a Native American woman standing with a bow at left, Aurora riding in a four wheeled cart pulled by two horses and accompanied by a flying cherub at bottom center, and a reclining young woman at lower right. It appears that $1.67 probably represented the first installment or down payment on a lot in Monroe. The piece was engraved by Capewell & Kimmel, 208 Broadway according to the imprint found in the bottom margin. That engraving firm was operating under that name at that address in New York from 1852 to 1856 suggesting these receipts were printed and used somewhat after the 1837 reincorporation. In his book, Interesting Notes About Denominations, Roger Durand declared the $1.67 denomination to be uncollectable, with only one example known to him at the time of publication. This second example, which does not appear to be the plate note in the Lee Michigan catalog, brings the total number of surviving examples known to us to three. For collectors of Michigan notes as well as those of odd denominations, this is a unique opportunity to acquire this excessive rarity which is free of repairs as well as meaningful impairments.
