Description

Monroe, MI- Bank of River Raisin $50 18__ G18 Lee MON-3-23 Remainder PMG Very Fine 25.
The bank was organized in 1832, rather early by Michigan standards, and led an on-again off-again existence. It suspended in 1839 and was revived in 1841 only to close for the second and final time in May 1846 and being subsequently placed in receivership. The $50 depicts an early passenger train at left and a Freeman Rawdon-signed vignette of Mercury presenting coins to an allegorical woman, perhaps representing Moneta seated by a strong box and griffin. A very scarce note that is seldom seen or offered.
