Description

Dubuque, IA- City of Dubuque $1 Feb. 1, 1858 Oakes 47-1 (2015) PMG Very Fine 20.
The city issued scrip during the course of 1857-58. According to one source, nearly $48,000,000 in scrip was issued; an astoundingly large sum if accurate. The notes were convertible into bonds paying a rather rich 10% interest rate, which may account for the notes' rarity today. In 2015, Oakes was unaware of the existence of this denomination and we have not identified any other public appearances of this denomination until now. The design features a vignette of an allegorical woman seated with cherubs and a dolphin at center flanked by vignettes of miners at work at left and a farmer seated with a large scythe at right. A large red ONE protector completes the design produced by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson. PMG notes a very small internal fold intersection split and a bit of ink burn in the Mayor's signature.
