Description
Terre Haute, IN- Prairie City Bank $3 18__ G6 Wolka 2340-06 Remainder PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.The bank opened as a state-chartered free bank in late 1852 under the terms of the state's 1852 Free Banking Act. It survived the Panic of 1857, the Civil War, and the Panic of 1873 as a free, and later private, bank only to fail and be placed in receivership on August 12, 1893. At the time, the bank was reported to have deposit liabilities of $138,000 and verifiable assets of $10,000, with $2,800 in the bank when it collapsed. The bank's owner, John S. Beach, was formerly the free bank's Cashier (ca. 1861) and President (ca. 1865). Fortunately, the bank's antebellum era circulation had been redeemed, in so far as was possible, decades earlier, with $62 outstanding in 1875. The $3 note is a remainder and features vignettes of Prosperity or Agriculture, Commerce, and Justice seated. A vignette of a woman holding flowers is at lower left and the state free banking die is at lower right. The note is quite scarce, with Wolka estimating a surviving population of fewer than a half dozen examples in non-Proof form.
