Description

Sycamore, IL- Sycamore Bank $1 18?? (Faded) G2a PCGS Apparent Good 06.
The Sycamore Bank was organized in 1862 and thus missed the bond market carnage that caused most of the state's bank failures in 1861. By the summer of 1864, the bank had a modest outstanding circulation of only $5,400 that was secured by $6,000 in Illinois 6% bonds. The bank failed in November 1866, with creditors ultimately receiving 48ยข on the dollar. The $1 design features a vignette of children playing under a tree although they were undoubtedly supposed to be keeping an eye on the cattle that surround them. The state free banking die is at left and a young girl's portrait and a vignette of farm fowl are at right. A green and white ONE protector panel completes the design. The note has a partial merchant stamp and a number of tape repairs of various faults on the back. This former Eric P Newman Collection holding is the only issued example we have offered in one of our public auctions.
