Description

Salem, IL- Salem Bank $10 Nov. 5, 1860 G10 Proprietary Proof PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ.
The Salem Bank was slated to open as a free bank in 1860, but it never did because of the impending Civil War crisis. Its notes were printed by the National Bank Note Company, but after operations became unfeasible, nearly all circulating notes were collected by officials and burned. This wonderful piece was produced by the ABNCo for corporate and promotional purposes during the 20th century from the plates utilized to create the original notes. At upper left is a breathtaking vignette of a train at a depot which was also used by the NBNCo on T3 Confederate Treasury Notes of 1861. The state auditor's die is located at upper right, and beehives representing Industry are at lower right. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to acquire an example from this institution, as only two Proofs and two remainders from the period are known to exist from the bank currently.
