Description

Rose Clare, IL- J.R. Jenkins 25¢ ? 2, 1878 (partially faded) PMG Very Fine 20.
Rose Clare (now Rosiclare), is located Hardin County, IL, and was a center for for lead and fluorspar mining until the 1990s. An ad appearing in the April 25, 1879, Hardin County Independent newspaper confirms that Jenkins was a dry goods and notions merchant. The note is pretty basic, depicting a young woman at left and the denomination in a round die at upper right with some minor staining. While PMG calls this a remainder, there appears to be a faint signature and serial number, as well as part of an 1878 date. This is the only example we are aware of at present.
