Description

Rome, GA- Western Bank of Georgia $5 May 15, 1841 G8 PMG Very Fine 20.
The Western Bank of Georgia was chartered in December 1836, but it experienced financial instability throughout its short life due to the Panic of 1837. By 1841, the institution closed due to a theft perpetrated by the teller of its Columbus branch. It was reported that this individual absconded with $75,000 in bank holdings, which would be valued at approximately $2.7 million today. The $5 design features a vignette of an early train passing two steamboats headed in the opposite direction down river. The left end panel has a vignette of herdsmen with cattle while the right end panel has a large FIVE. The Georgia coat of arms is at bottom center. PMG mentions that the note has evidence of previous mounting and has a penciled cost code on the back. Neither of these issues is overly distracting. Scarce and seldom offered.
