Description

Rome, GA- Bank of the Empire State $5 18__ G6a Proof PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
The bank commenced operations on March 2, 1857, and likely remained in business until Rome fell to Union forces on May 18, 1864. A contemporary news item indicated that the bank's books had "fallen into enemies' hands." The bank's notes were quoted as low as 5ยข on the dollar immediately after the war, pretty much confirming that the bank did not survive the end of hostilities by very long. The $5 design features a vignette of a farm wife caring for her children during the harvest flanked by a vignette of two Native American males gazing at a distant city at lower left and another of the Georgia coat of arms at lower right. The note has an overall orange tint and a large orange and white V protector at center. The note is printed on India paper with four small POCs in the signature lines and was one of around eighteen or so examples of this note that were in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
