Description

Washington, AR- Washington Exchange Company 50¢ Apr. 1, 1862 Rothert 684-3 PMG Very Fine 25.
Exchange companies such as this were established to try to take the place of commercial banks which had been banned by the state's Constitution since 1846. This note is printed on the back of a sheet of remainder $5 notes from the Washington branch of the Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas which had been placed in receivership in 1842. The note was payable in a wide range of notes including Arkansas war bonds and treasury notes, Confederate notes, or Louisiana bank notes if presented in multiples of $10. The note is fully issued, with PMG mentioning minor repairs (primarily sealing short edge tears) which are difficult to completely see through the holder.
