Description

Kepner, PA- Labor Exchange- Brunswick Colony of Eastern Pennsylvania Branch 230 5 Units 1897 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
Officially designated as the Brunswick Colony of Eastern Pennsylvania, Branch no. 230, of the Labor Exchange Association, this location was one of many Labor Exchanges set up in the mid-1890s across the United States. It was established in April-May of 1897 and began its life focused on agricultural pursuits. By that November, it had forty colonists and was starting to think about adding manufacturing operations. The cooperative's ultimate fate is, at present, unknown although it is likely that, like almost all of the other Labor Exchange branches, it probably disbanded before 1910. This certificate is unusual on a couple of counts. Neither the large 5 Unit value nor the more elaborate name for the branch appearing on this note are often encountered on Labor Exchange notes. Of the two 5 Units notes presently known from this location, this is, by far, the nicer of the two and bears serial number 4 as well as a partial branch ink stamp on the back.
