Description

Utica, NY- Bank of Central New York "Spurious" $5 "Check" 18__ as S10 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The Bank of Central New York was organized in 1838 and remained, at least nominally, in business until April 11, 1860, when it was finally placed in receivership. This note raises some interesting questions. There has been a dispute for years regarding whether this note is a spurious issue or a genuine issue of the bank. Several news items have been recently discovered which cast more light on the situation. Under lists of "recent counterfeits," this note is listed as a CHECK on the bank. This would certainly explain the lack of the state banking die, space for a state agent countersignature, and spaces for the Cashier and President to sign. It is possible that this was a maneuver by the bank to place a form of currency in circulation without having to comply with all of the requirements of a registered bank note. It is also possible that this was a third party attempt at fraud. The note features a large vignette of two horses by a framed sunrise image, suggestive of a coat of arms. This is flanked at left by an oval cameo-like medallion head FIVE counter and a locomotive vignette and on the right by a similar oval cameo-like medallion head portrait with 5 counters above and below. The piece is printed on India paper with three POCs in the signature line (presumably for use by the maker of the check) with eleven examples in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
