Description

Unknown, NY (?)- Uncertain Issuer 37-1/2¢ May 1, 1838 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
Printed by E.P. Whaites, this note is a so-called "maverick," with no state or issuing location shown on the note. The only other known issuer of this note was located in South Carolina and has no apparent connection with this issuer whose name is obscured by a pen cancellation. The design features Prosperity, seated, gazing at a distant sailing vessel, flanked by the denomination expressed as both XXXV11 1/2 and 37 1/2 in two panels. The end panels repeat the denomination in similar fashion. The note was payable "at my store," making this a merchant issue, but that is about all that can be said about this note's origins and issuer. The note has a large gutter fold printing error that runs diagonally from near the center of the top margin down to the middle of the right margin. This is the only note known at present from this location/issuer and one of only four or five known, including the South Carolina notes.
