Plattsburgh, NY- Mercantile Bank $50 18__ as G12 Proof PMG Choice About Unc 58.
The Mercantile Bank was organized as a so-called Individual Bank under New York banking law during the course of 1853-54 and remained in business as a state bank until being suspended in 1866 (per Dillistin). The $50 design features a panoramic vignette of an approximation of the New York state coat of arms flanked by Liberty and Justice with a sidewheeler steamer and passenger train in the background. The state bank department die is at top center. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines and was part of the ABNCo holdings sold in 1990 which included fourteen examples of this note.
