Description
Bath, NY- Bank of Bath $10 18__ G8a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.Collectors will find the task of obtaining genuine examples from this institution nearly impossible, as evidenced by the fact that all genuine designs were recorded as SENC in the Haxby reference. The bank was organized in 1854 and closed a decade later in 1864 to make way for the First National Bank of Bath, charter 165. This charming $10 Proof features a banker's portrait at lower right and a vignette of livestock drinking from a pond at center. At upper left of this central illustration is the state's banking department die, and at lower center is a safe. The note is printed on bright white, completely original India paper mounted to cardstock with four punch cancels in the signature lines. This piece was once a part of an uncut $10-$20 pair which sold as part of Lot 1077 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. We auctioned that pair in March 2020, and it was cut later. This $10 again crossed our desk in August 2021, when it realized $540. We could see that figure tested or exceeded tonight, as our current offering is likely unique in Proof form.
