Description

Newark, NJ- Newark City Bank $1 Sep. 15, 1858 G20d Wait 1525 PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15.
The Newark City Bank was incorporated in 1851, and in 1865, it converted into the Newark City National Bank, charter 1220. This visually attractive ace with printed red serial numbers represents a design which we have not had the opportunity to auction previously. Though listed in the Wait reference, no plate note is imaged, and similarly, the Haxby book records this layout but does not offer a picture of a plate note. At lower left is a female portrait, at right is a kneeling Ceres with her sickle, and at center is a man operating a large piece of industrial equipment, which Wait identifies as a "heavy turning lathe." A green "1" and "ONE" overprint, added to the face by the ABNCo, enhances aesthetic appeal. We have offered just one note from this institution across all denominations prior to now. That piece, a $5 graded at the PMG 15 level, realized $732 in January 2019. PCGS Banknote indicates that this piece is stained.
